Invisalign Truths you Need to Know

Invisalign® New Orleans, LAInvisalign has been around long enough now that this method of straightening teeth has become relatively well-known. At least it would seem that way. Often, what we come to find out is that people interested in Invisalign know the basics; they know they won’t have to wear braces, and they can eat the foods they would like. Hooray for that! While there is much to celebrate with Invisalign, we think it is wise to be prepared, so we are offering a few truths that may not be covered in the mainstream.

  1. Aligners are meant for near-constant wear. The treatment protocol only works if you work it. Because aligners are removable (benefit #1!), it is far easier than you might imagine leaving the clear trays out more often than you should. A good rule of thumb is to get into the habit of removing aligners only to eat and brush.
  2. Your toothbrush is your new BFF. One of the advantages of Invisalign treatment is that it is easier to clean teeth without brackets to brush around. The trade-off, though, is that the full extent of tooth structure is covered nearly 24/7. If teeth and aligners are not brushed after meals, as well as morning and night, there may be a substantial risk for cavities and other problems.
  3. Invisalign is completely comfortable – sometimes. To expect nothing out of the ordinary regarding physical sensation could set you up for disappointment. The fact of the matter is, Invisalign is designed to move teeth! While most patients would not describe their journey as painful, a bit of discomfort should be expected as pressure is asserted and teeth change position.
  4. Invisalign is only the first step. Even though Invisalign is different than braces regarding method, the underlying principles are the same. Teeth that are moved into proper position will move back if follow-up is not prescribed. That follow-up is a set of finishing aligners; retainers, basically, that need to be worn consistently to prevent relapse.

There is immense value in a straight, healthy smile. Learn more about Invisalign from your New Orleans dentist.
